Finding Profitable Niches – Choosing Your Hungry Market

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Is Your Market Hungry For Your Product?

When it comes to finding profitable niches do not make the mistake of going with a “gut reaction”. Your decision must be based on cold hard facts. Is there really a market? More importantly, will your visitors actually be buyers? You must learn to look beyond just the number of searches done per day to determine if you will be able to sell product to your hot niche.
There will be times when you will want to build an authority site where your main product is information and you will monetize it with PPC/PPV advertising such as Adsense but, for the most part, you want your visitors to purchase your products.

Okay, so for the first step, let’s look at how to find a niche that is worth investing all of your time on.

Where to search for niches.

  • amazon.com One place I like to start is Amazon. You can spend hours surfing around this site to look not only for the niches but what is selling in the niches, but we will get into that in the monetization section. For now, we just want to know if there are people out there interested in a particular niche. Navigate to the magazine section. There are hundreds and hundreds of different magazine in hundreds of different niches. Just take a few moments to browse through them. You are looking for a specific niche. Are there any magazines that have dug deeper than the broad topic? For example: If your passion is antique collecting, see if you can narrow it down in the magazine section to Early American or better yet, Chippendale. If there is a magazine that specific with the niche there is a pretty good chance that you have a market. Publishers do not create a magazine unless there is enough interest.
  • dummies.com The next place to look for niche ideas is the Dummies site store. You know, these are the “Internet for Dummies”, “Bathroom Renos for Dummies” books that you see in all of the book shops. These are excellent sources for niches because you know they would not publish a book about a particular topic if enough people weren’t searching for that info. Surf through the categories and titles to see if there is something there that would interest you.
  • eBay and eBay Pulse eBay and eBay Pulse are another good source to look for profitable niches. eBay Pulse will show you all of the hottest products that are currently being bought on eBay. Notice I said “bought” not sold. That means that people want these products and are buyers.

So there you have three very good places to start to find profitable niches and hungry markets to get your business started.

Our next post will discuss how to select “buyers keywords” to ensure that your visitors will have their credit card in hand when they visit your website.
