What Is An Article Directory?

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Article directories are sites where businesses, individuals and authors can write and submit articles about specific topics. These content sites have become very popular ways for marketers to syndicate their content.

The directories are category based and searchable making it very easy to find information and content to suit your needs. You are encouraged to publish and share the articles and stories found within the article directory.

Some examples of article directories are eZineArticles, GoArticles and ArticleBase. The directories provide free content for websites, blogs and magazines. Anyone can re-publish the content so long as they adhere to the article directory terms of use. The terms of use generally mean you must include the author BIO and credits when you publish the content. It is forbidden to plagiarize any content found in the directories.

As a marketer, article directories offer a fantastic opportunity for you to get exposure for your website. By writing good quality articles, you may get republished in other people’s blogs, websites, newsletters and eZines. You are allowed to place links to your website in the resource box or author bio of each article you submit.

These links not only count as a High PR backlink to your website, they also have the potential to generate many more inbound links on related sites as others place your articles on their blogs.

Another advantage of publishing to article directories is the search engine value. These sites tend to be valued by the search engines and therefore have very high quality scores. Many times your articles from the directories will show up on the first page of search engines long before your actual website will.

Article marketing to these sites are a must for anyone trying to promote their websites. It is very easy to do but you must make sure your content is original and of good quality.

What is a .Edu and .Gov And Why Are People So Crazy About Getting Links On Them?

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Saturday, March 20th, 2010

First let us discuss what .edu and .gov are.  They are domain name extensions similar to .com but with some very key differences. Anyone can register .com, .net, org, etc domain name extensions as part of their domain names. The .edu and .gov extensions are not available to just anyone. You must meet very strict guidelines to be entitled to register those domain extensions.

Who can register a .edu or.gov domain?

.gov domains are limited to United States government organizations at the federal, Native Sovereign Nation, state, and local level, and U.S. territories.

.edu registration is limited to U.S. postsecondary institutions that are institutionally accredited, i.e., the entire institution and not just particular programs, by agencies on the U.S. Department of Education’s list of Nationally Recognized Accrediting Agencies.

Why is everyone keen on getting a link on an .edu or .gov site?

If you understand the value of backlinks or inbound links, you may not understand that often quality far out-weighs quantity. Because of the strict guidelines on who may qualify for the .edu and .gov domain names, the search engines place a very high quality score to those websites. One link on a qualified site can be worth thousands of normal backlinks when it comes to boosting your site up the positioning in search engine results.

As a result, it has become the focus of many off page SEO strategies to get as many links on government and education websites as possible. But do not assume that a link anywhere on a .gov or .edu site will give the same value.

It has been the trend for students to “lease out” links to their student pages for a fee. These links will have little or no value. Usually there is a ~studentname in the URL and that page actually has very little value. To get a genuine .edu or .gov is very rare and very difficult. Someone might be lucky enough to get one as an honourable mention for a donation or for participating in a research project, but the fact is that an educational institute or government agency is not likely to hand out wholesale links to any internet marketing website for very good reason. They need to protect the integrity of their website.

So do not focus a great deal of time on this. If it comes along it is like winning a lottery, but your chances are just about as likely as winning that lottery.

What is Social Book Marking?

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Saturday, March 20th, 2010

As a new internet marketer, you will hear much about social bookmarking. This is a term used broadly for the latest trend of social sites, link sharing or micro-blogging sites. Initially intended for a way to share your favourite sites with your friends and anyone with similar interests, these sites have now become a way to market your business, connect with potential customers and stay up-to-date with the happenings within your niche market.

Social book marking sites include sites such as Digg, Delicious, StumbleUpon, etc. All of these sites have toolbars that you can add onto your browser as a plugin that will allow you to add any sites of interest as you are surfing the net.

These sites are free to use. You create an account and fill out your profile. Then you install the widget or toolbar as an odd-on to your web browser. Once that is done, you can simply click a button to add a bookmark to your account. This will add the URL, and page title to your list. You have the option of filling out keyword tags and a brief description of what the page is about.

When you begin using social bookmarking as a marketing platform you must proceed with caution. Remember that these sites were not intended for marketing but rather as social sites. If you get carried away with the marketing and self-promotion, you may find your account banned from the system.

Whenever you are using a site as a means to further your business, remember to be a good neighbour. Include other sites of interest within your niche aside from your own and you will find you get much more interest from other members of the social bookmarking community.

The links to your site that you share also count as great back links and a means to drive traffic to your website, so treat them with respect and you will benefit from being included in the social bookmarking communities.

How Do You Set Up FTP To Upload Your Website To Your Web Host?

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Now that you have your website ready, it is time to upload all of your files to your web host. Although many web hosts have online file uploaders, it will take a very long time to upload each file individually. You will want to use an FTP client to do a bulk upload of your entire site with one click.

First you will need your FTP login information from your web host. If your host uses a cpanel access, you will navigate to the FTP account area in the cpanel. The host would have automatically created a default account for you when they created your webhosting account.

Click on the “configure FTP” button and it will bring up your login information. If you have not already installed your software, you will need to do that first. Open the software and click on the “connect” in the menu. This should bring up a window or login box depending on the software you are using.

From the information provided by the host, you will fill in all of the necessary fields. This will include your host location. This is usually ftp.yourdomain.com , you will also input your username and password. Once connected, you will have two sections in the FTP software. One area will be your files on your computer, the other section will be the files in your web host. If your site is new, there may not be any files showing in the host side.

Now on your desktop side, you need to navigate to the website files that you want to upload into your webhost. Now all you need to do is highlight the files you want to transfer and click the arrow or add to queue and click to transfer. This will begin the process of copying all of your website files to your web host server.

When it is complete, open your browser and type in your site URL and you should be able to see your website. Any time you make changes to your website, you will need to FTP the updated file to your web host. The software will prompt you to rename or overwrite existing files. If you are updating, you will choose to overwrite the old file. This prompt is there to prevent you from overwriting files with  duplicate names by accident.

What is FTP?

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Saturday, March 20th, 2010

FTP is short for File Transfer Protocol. As the name suggests, it is a means to transfer files from one computer to another. The software used to do this is called an FTP client.

Most often, this software is used to upload files to a webhost but it can also be used to download files from the internet. You can use an FTP client to transfer files between two computers in a network, download documents and other media from the internet to your desktop or upload from your desktop to the internet.

There are some download and sharing websites that are run entirely on file transfer protocol and give any user access to their file archives. These sites are frequently very busy and may take several attempts before you can get a connection.

Many browsers today have FTP built into them or it is available as an add-on. The stand alone software can be found as Open Source (free) such as Filezilla or popular paid software such as WSFTP.

If you are designing a web site you will need an FTP client to upload all of your website files and folders to your webhost before you site will be available online. Most web hosts offer a file uploader online but it will take forever to upload your files one at a time. An FTP client will allow you to upload all of your files in bulk with one click.

What Are Dofollow And Nofollow Links?

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Saturday, March 20th, 2010

If you have been doing any research on off page SEO or back links you have likely heard the terms nofollow and dofollow links and that you only want to get dofollow links for link popularity. This can be confusing unless you understand what all the fuss is about and how to tell the difference between the two.

In reality, there is no such thing as a dofollow link. All links are dofollow by default. This means that if you place a standard link on any website the search engines will find and count the link as a backlink pointing to your website.

A nofollow link is created by placing a nofollow HTML code related to a specific link or it can be coded into a website to make all links nofollow. What this code does is tell the search engines not to recognize the link.

I am sure you are wondering why anyone would not want a search engine to recognize a link. There are several reasons for this.

  1. To prevent spam links, some sites will set all links in comments and profiles to be nofollow. This would prevent search engines from associating your website with undesirable links from spammers who often will leave links in comments and profiles in hopes of gaining some backlinks to their site.
  2. Paid links are frowned upon by Google as they see it as a means of manipulating search engine results by buying link popularity. If someone has paid to have a link on your website it is a good idea to place a nofollow tag to the link.

For the purpose of building backlinks to your website to improver your search engine position, you should focus your attention on finding places to leave dofollow links as they are the only ones that will advance your SERP, however, do not overlook the value of certain nofollow links on high traffic sites as they will help bring traffic to your website.

You should have at least a few nofollow links in your backlink strategy as it will look unnatural to search engines if all of your links are High PR dofollow links.

What Is Article Spinning?

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Spinning an article is the term used for using software to re-write articles. There are times when you might want to use the same article on different websites but you do not want the article to be exactly the same.

When you run an article through an article spinner, it will create a different version of the same article but with a percentage of uniqueness so it will not appear the same for search engines.

You must be careful when using this type of software to create new articles as not many article spinners do a very good job and your end results will be less than desirable if you are looking to provide good quality content. Often, the readability is very poor and the article presents itself as being written in broken English.

These programs generally use a thesaurus type of system where they will replace certain words with synonyms. In theory, this would be an excellent way to produce variations of the same articles, but in reality, it usually leaves much to be desired.

Let me show you an example of how an article spinner works.

I will demonstrate how a spun sentence might look. For this example I will use the sentence, “Mary wants to obtain a university degree in business management.” If I ran this through an article spinner, these are a few examples of the results I might get.

“Mary desires to get a university credentials in company handling”

“Mary yearns to achieve a academy approbation in organization control”

As you can see, this would not be good for your reputation if your articles started to look like this. The meaning of the original sentence is completely lost and the readability is very poor.

If you really want to create unique articles to be used on a variety of sites, it would be much more worthwhile to spend the time re-writing them yourself or hiring someone to do it for you.
