Using Pay Per Click to Promote Your Small Business

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

By Marco Lombardo

There are many different options available to a small business to increase their online exposure.  Pay per click advertising is one option.  Pay per click (PPC) advertising is the process of paying a search engine to sponsor advertisements for a website high in their rankings.  This process will give an unknown business a chance at customers they would not have had access to without it.  Most small businesses use the Google Adwords program to sponsor their pay per click advertising campaign.

History of Google Adwords

Google adwords has existed for quite a while now, so they have had time to work out some of the kinks.  It used to be a rule in PPC advertising that a small business would be lost in the shuffle of hundreds of marketers advertising for the same large business.  A few years ago, Google changed their policy to state that only one link to a specific business’ website would be allowed.  This opened the door for smaller businesses to get higher sponsored rankings for a lower cost because the competition from the affiliate marketers dropped off a bit.

Now businesses can pay for advertising spots for certain keywords (terms that people use when searching online) and get on the front page of Google without having to rely as heavily on search engine optimization.  You will need to head over to Google Adwords and set up an account.  Then write your keyword targeted advertisements. Creating different advertisements for different keywords will help you to convert more sales.  You will then set the price you want to pay for your ad.  This will determine how high it is ranked in Google.  You will need to adjust the cost of the advertisement for the expected profit.  It is easy to go over your budget if you are not careful.  After you have finished creating your advertisement, you can modify it to improve results.  Trial and error is recommended if you want the best results for your campaign.

PPC as an Alternative to Search Engine Optimization

Pay per click advertising has opened the door to small businesses in the sense that they don’t have to compete for search engine rankings.  Smaller businesses generally have smaller websites.  This makes it harder to be found on Google naturally because it limits the amount of keywords the website can target.  Pay per click advertising allows a business to get on the first page for a specific keyword and bypass the hassles of SEO.  It can cost thousands of dollars to pay a search engine optimization guru to promote your website.  It could even take months or years before your website is indexed high enough on Google before bringing in sales.  This is what makes pay per click advertising such a viable advertising option for a fledgling businesses.

Targeting Niche Keywords

To really tap into the power of PPC advertising, you will need to target niche keywords.  Targeting niche keywords will attract a more focused audience for a lower price.  This is the best way to reduce the overall cost of PPC advertising and increase sales conversions.  By avoiding the big ticket keywords and focusing on creating specific advertisements for the niche keywords, any small business can be a big success.   You can find out which keywords will be the biggest bang for the buck by using the Google Adwords keyword tool.  This is a free service that will tell you the price for any keyword in the top three sponsored positions.  It will also show you how much competition there is, and how many searches per month that keyword receives.  Find the right keyword for a low cost, and it could mean near instant success for any small business.

Targeting Local Customers

Some local businesses have had great success with PPC advertising program. If they have a product with a higher value, for instance an estate agent selling a luxurious property on commission, then if they convert one person out of every one thousand that clicks on their ads, it will be worth it.  Therefore, it is important to have a highly efficient landing page designed to increase sales.

It is much cheaper for local businesses to use PPC advertising because they are offered the opportunity to only display their ads to certain cities.  This will reduce the amount of errant clicks that hold no chance of converting.  It is extremely important to turn this feature on if you are only targeting local customers.  If you don’t it could mean a large advertising cost with no chance of converting clicks into sales.

Specified vs. Generic Keyword Cost

The difference in cost between specified and generic searches can be staggering.  If you look at the keyword term “buy homes”, you will notice there are 1.8 million searches every month.  This is a very high number of searches and every click could cost up to $3.25.  The cost could add up very quickly.   When searching for a home in a specific city the cost is much less.  The keyword “Wooster homes” brings in 6,600 searches every month, and the top position only costs $1.08.  It is obvious, by looking at these statistics, that focusing on a specific keyword niche is a more efficient way to convert sales.  This is an effective process for any local business, not just real estate.

Pay per click advertising is a profitable supplement to search engine optimization and can keep a company afloat until they can be found organically.  Businesses have been using pay per click advertising successfully for approximately ten years now.   The important part to remember is to find a niche to target and monitor costs at all times.  Even though most programs allow you to put a limit on your spending, your costs could fly out of control if you are not careful.  Focus on converting sales, and pay per click advertising will work well for the small business.

How to Build your Opt in List with Google Adwords

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Friday, March 5th, 2010

The challenge of building a targeted email subscriber list haunts many aspiring marketers. You have two options. Build your list quickly by spending money on acquiring prospective customers. Increase your subscriber count slowly, through expanding your existing marketing base. When attempting to expand your business quickly, Google Adwords presents an attractive alternative to acquiring opt in subscribers.

Google offers an advertising program known as Adwords, where you will create an advertisement, and then pay per click for each visitor that comes to your site. When someone searches for a particular keyword in the Google search engine, your ad will show up on the top or to the side of the results.

So how does this benefit your list building efforts?

When a visitor clicks your advertisement, they will be directed to your page, meaning that you have an excellent opportunity to collect their information, through the use of an email subscription box.

Beware! When using this service, there are many pitfalls that can quickly eat through your advertising budget. The difference, between following and not following these tips, can mean that you will pay ten times as much in order to gain an email subscriber.

Google Adwords utilizes quality scores, in order to ensure that people who visit their search results are not redirected to junk pages. Junk advertisements could decrease the relevancy of their search engine results, sending potential customers to competitors such as Yahoo Search or Bing.

The Google quality score ranges from one to ten, with ten being a perfect score. Generally speaking, a higher quality score results in significantly lower costs per opt in list conversion.

Here are some tips to lower the price of your opt in conversion rate costs. Handbags will be used as the keyword example.

1.) Try to register a domain name with the keyword, which you are trying to advertise. For example, handbagshop.com will give you an increased quality score for the word handbag.

2.) Write keyword specific content. Google does not appreciate spam landing pages. Attempt to write at least 400 words of specific content about the keyword.

3.) Bid on less common keywords. Competition is high for single word terms. Try to expand your keyword research. Instead of bidding on the keyword handbag, try longer terms such as designer handbags, purple purse, or fashion bags. The more specific your keywords, the less you will pay per conversion rate for an email list subscriber. In addition, highly targeted customers are more likely to purchase goods and services from you.

4.) For each of these obscure keywords, create an individual page with the keyword as the title. For example, when bidding on the keyword fashion bags, write a 400 word article with the title as fashion bags.

5.) Utilize negative keywords. If a prospective opt in email list subscriber uses one of these keywords in their internet search, they will not see your advertisement. For example, someone searching for free handbags is not likely to purchase your product, and your advertising money has been wasted.

6.) Bid high at first. You can always lower your bids later on, as your quality score improves. Higher bids mean increased rankings in the advertising algorithms. Google Adwords appreciates high click through rates on their advertisements, and they will reward you with lower bid prices. If you initially start with low bids, raising your quality score is much more difficult.

To build their opt in email lists, many entrepreneurs have utilized Google Adwords with great effectiveness. While learning the ins and outs of pay per click list building, there exists a steep learning curve. Following these tips should allow you to receive a high conversion rate at an inexpensive price.

Quality Score – The Holy Grail for Your PPC Campaign

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Sunday, February 28th, 2010

To most PPC (Pay Per click) campaigners, Quality Score is just another statistic that they don’t understand. But to those savvy few that truly comprehend how Google’s PPC program works, Quality Score is the key to improving their sales while spending less money.

So what is Quality Score and why should you care about it? Simply put, Quality Score is Google’s way of making sure that only relevant ads and websites get promoted for a user’s keyword search.  Google wants their users to find the information that they need in a quick and easy way, so they assign each of your keywords a number from one to ten. If this Quality Score is high, your ad will not only appear more often, but it will have a higher position as well.  The user has a better experience, Google makes more money, and you get better quality clicks. Everyone wins.

That’s why this number is so important. If your keywords have a high Quality Score, your cost-per-click will go down and your ad position will much better. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that if you are paying less money for better position, your return on investment will much greater.

How Quality Score is Determined and Strategies to Improve It

  • Keywords in your ad copy. One of Google’s factors in determining your Quality Score is if the keywords are actually in your ad.

For example, if your keywords are “green apples,” you want those words in your copy.

Lowest Price, Best Quality

  • Keywords in your URL. Google also looks to see if the keywords are in your URL. Look at the example above and notice the keywords in the URL. Here’s a little tip: Only the main URL has to be valid (www.myCompany.com). You can make up the words that come after the backslash and Google will not care. So why not add some keywords there?
  • Keywords on you landing page.  This is an important one. Google wants a good user experience. If your ad pointed to a website that had nothing to do with green apples, the user would not like it. So part of the Quality Score is calculated by looking at your landing page and looking for keywords. Make sure that your landing page has the content that the user is searching for.
  • Create small keyword groups for each landing page. Creating small, relevant keyword groups that point to a unique landing page will ensure that the user has a good experience – and Google will reward that. Ideally, you would want one landing page for each keyword, but if you have 1000 keywords, that isn’t feasible. So creating small keyword groups is the net best thing.

Increasing your Quality Score will take a little work and a little experimentation, but once you start seeing those scores increase, you will begin to see a difference. Your cost-per-click will go down, your ad placement will improve, and ultimately, your sales will increase. And isn’t that the real reason for a PPC campaign?

7 Fatores para fazer a sua campanha de PPC(Pago Por Click)arrancar!

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Saturday, February 13th, 2010

7 Factors To Make Your Pay Per Click Campaign take off!

By Chad Carlton · Comments (0) · Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Now when you launch your pay per click campaigns there are some crucial boxes you should tick to stand a better chance of making it work for your internet business. If you don’t tick these boxes some of your competitors will certainly get the better of you!
Before we look at these “checklist” points let me provide you with a mini- recap on the basic pay per click mechanics.
Once you have signed up to Google Adwords and created your advert you will pay Google a fee for each click coming from search engine results. Depending on how much a person bids for a keyword over his competitor will determine how high up the advert will be positioned in the search engine sponsored results.
For example you bid $0.50 on the term ‘article software’. If no other people bid on this, then you will stay in 1st position. Alternatively, if a competitor bids $0.60, then this individual will go to 1st position, all assuming of course that you both have the same Click Through Rates(CTR).
Basically it is like an auction procedure for position 1 onwards. Read More→
